Miracles CAN Happen... Protecting Yourself from Damaged and Aging Skin

by Lisa Testa

Dry and aging skin can be the result of many things: lack of proper body hydration, lack of essential oils in the diet, the skin's reaction to pollution and toxic waste, the body's response to cold and windy winter conditions, and of course, the natural change in chemistry as our bodies age. Obviously we cannot change the weather or make the years go slower, but there are things that you can do to help protect yourself from skin and aging damage, and to repair problems as they occur before they get worse.

What goes in must come out...

The most important facet to maintaining good skin is our body's internal environment. The cleaner your diet, the cleaner your skin, and the more responsive it will be to protective measures. Pure, natural foods and water fuel a healthy body and help its maintenence systems to work at their full potential. Eating mainly fresh, raw plant foods ensures an adequate amount of water intake to keep the skin well-hydrated and also promotes a high consumption of antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables which help to counteract free radicals that can damage and prematurely age our skin.

There are many foods that actually help the body's production of oil...the presence of which is often lacking more in our skin when it is dry. Healthy fats like avocado, coconut, raw nuts and seeds, and cold-pressed oils are all very beneficial when eaten in small to moderate amounts. These oils, and the foods they come from, are also very high in essential fatty acids (EFAs) and vitamin E. Essential fatty acids are nutrients that directly impact skin and hair, but are not always able to be synthesized directly in the body. These EFAs are available to us in many foods, including: almonds, chia seeds, flaxseeds and flaxseed oil, hemp seeds, pine nuts, pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, walnuts, sprouts, and dark green leafy vegetables. Vitamin E is found in these food sources as well, and is known for its ability to improve elasticity in aging skin.

Sealing the deal with outer protection...

It is crucial to daily cleanse, hydrate, and moisturize our skin. Cleansing removes dry, dead skin cells, and one of the most natural ingredients to aide in this action is honey. Honey is nourishing and is known to help draw out impurities out of the skin. It also helps to diminish enlarged pores. Hydration is another key factor in external skincare. In addition to drinking water, we can hydrate our skin with a natural hydrator, preferably with one containing soothing aloe vera and healing herbs like calendula, jasmine, rose, peppermint, and ylang-ylang. Finally, moisturizing skin regularly is critical to keeping skin youthful, smooth, and healthy. Again, one should be chosen which utilizes only pure ingredients that will encourage healing results for our skin.
